Tourism

Tourism has great potential in Georgia, and in the near future could become a significant contributor to economic development. CHF, through its USAID funded Georgia Employment and Infrastructure Initiative (GEII), is well-situated to be a leading force in the development of tourism in rural areas of Georgia. Working in close cooperation with local governments, the Department of Tourism, and local leaders, the GEII program supports efforts to introduce visitors to an array of tourist offerings in rural areas of Georgia. Leveraging the assets of rural communities, initiatives are undertaken on the community level in concert with larger governmental efforts.
Successful tourism is about supply and demand, but sustainable tourism is always about community involvement, local ownership and job creation, and preservation and management of cultural and natural heritage. Tourism creates jobs for local communities directly through lodging, dining, and shopping, and indirectly through construction and services. It stimulates entrepreneurs and diversifies economies, particularly in rural areas where employment and income may be sporadic or insufficient.
Moreover, the nature of tourism is especially well-suited to small-scale rural enterprises. Many remote areas in Georgia are ideal locations for nature-based activities, like hunting and fishing, or ecotourism activities, such as hiking and rafting.
A wide variety of tourist opportunities exist throughout rural Georgia and will continue to grow as increasing numbers of local entrepreneurs identify new ways to market previously untapped local resources and attractions and bring tourists into their area.
